FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Below are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about child sexual abuse. When a particularly horrifying case is made public, such as Penn State’s recent scandal with Jerry Sandusky or the case of the girl held captive for 18 years, Jaycee Dugard, everyone is asking questions. The victim, friends and family, and the public are all asking questions – some of which are never fully addressed in the media. How could this happen? Why didn’t anybody report it? Why didn’t the child ask for help? And the list goes on. Our goal is to change that.

Every situation is different, however there are circumstances, attitudes, beliefs, and fears that remain consistent across the multitude of cases made public (and those not made public). The answers provided below do not reflect any one case, but a series of hundreds of cases studied over the years. Any resemblance to private abuse cases occurs because of sheer magnitude of child sexual abuse cases and in no way reflects any one individual or situation. The information provided is generalized across a broad spectrum of cases and should not be considered definitive for any one case or situation.
