CHILD ABUSE/SEXUAL ABUSE/NEGLECT     One out of every four girls and one out of every six boys will have suffered some form of sexual abuse by their 18th birthday. Somewhere around 5,000 children are being sexually abused, in the tri-county area, often by the very people they trust most. These abused children range in age from the tiniest infant to the toughest teenager. They reside in every corner of our counties and come from every socioeconomic strata and type of family.

Unfortunately, only a small percentage of those will be reported. Without early intervention, these children often go on to have significant emotional or behavioral problems, which can include: depression, drug and alcohol abuse, prostitution, adolescent pregnancy and suicidal tendencies. It is critical to provide comprehensive, quality care in a compassionate manner to these children in order to minimize the trauma they've endured and to prevent these likely negative life consequences.

Many of the services these young victims need are scattered across the county and loosely coordinated. At the most critical point of disclosure or discovery, a terrified child must repeat the abuse scenario over and over again. Further, to get needed treatment and support, abused children and their families must negotiate a maze of systems, which can be completely overwhelming. Compounding these challenges, the community is burdened by the costs of a fragmented system.
